Prominent Civil Rights, Human Rights, and Migrant Rights Organizations

Introduction

In recent times, there has been an upsurge for several human rights violation all around the United States. They include police brutality, racism, and discrimination on the basis of gender.

This has led to people questioning the existence of organizations that advocate for protection and preservation of human rights. The following are some of the most famous defenders of civil, human and migrant rights.

The American Civil Liberties Union

The American Civil Liberties Union abbreviated as ACLU was founded on 19th January 1920 as a nonpartisan and nonprofit organization whose main objective is the protection and defense of civil rights and freedoms in the United States.

The ACLU works with different organizations and institutions including courts, legislatures, and communities in an effort to protect and preserve individual rights and freedoms that are secured by the Constitution and the laws of the United States. The Advocates for Human Rights

The Advocates for Human Rights was founded in 1983 as an independent, non-partisan and non-profit human rights organization.

The advocates strive to create lasting and holistic changes both locally and abroad by developing internationally accepted human rights standards aimed at reinforcing the rule of law and promotion of the civil society.

The Advocates for Human Rights have been helping improve the lives of marginalized people including women and children, immigrants and refugees, and ethnic and religious minorities by probing and exposing human rights violations.

The Advocate for Human Rights also helps immigrants and refugees seeking asylum by representing them.

About Lacey & Larkin Frontera Fund

The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund was founded by Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin, who also happen to be the founders of Village Voice Media and Phoenix New Times.

This fund was established in a deliberate effort of helping civil rights, human rights and migrant rights advocacy groups operating in Arizona uphold civic participation and freedom of speech.

Lacey and Larkin sued Maricopa County for violation of their First Amendment Rights by the County Sherriff Joe Arpaio.

After a tedious legal battle, the duo finally prevailed in the United States Court of Appeals and the court awarded them a $3.75 million. Lacey and Larkin used the monies to set up the fund.
